Buying Lingerie for a Woman is Hard.
We know, we know. Every year men come into our brick and mortar store and attempt to buy lingerie for their women. And every year on February 15 we have a line of women waiting to exchange, usually shaking their heads and asking “what the hell was he thinking?!” If you feel you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t, you can never get it right, fear not. This year we’ve enlisted a woman’s help to help make sure your Valentine’s lingerie purchase is a hit, for both of you. And don’t worry, if all of this sounded like Swahili, when in doubt head to your nearest lingerie store and try and have a few key pieces of information in mind. If you can get her bra and panty size, great. Even her clothing size is helpful. Putting the palm of your hand out and saying her boob fits in there is not. The more information a sales clerk has, the more they can assist you. But read on and good luck!
Every person has their own idea of sexy when it comes to lingerie.
Your idea of sexy may be crotchless panties, her idea of sexy might be your old cotton undershirt. When buying lingerie as a gift, you should take into account what you like, but also what makes her feel sexy. It’s the compromise that makes all the difference – so crotchless cotton undies maybe? Maybe not. But take a moment to listen to when she complains about her trouble areas (and trust us, she will) and make sure you buy pieces that highlight her assets and camoflauge her perceived problems. IWe broke down the common shapes and outlined tips for finding lingerie that feels tailored to her body.
Has she had kids? Is she conscious about her stomach? It’s the number one problem women complain about. Help her tame her tummy with a teddy or camisole made from a Lycra or spandex fabric blend, or camouflage it with an Empire-waist nightie. If she’d rather keep her tummy covered, seek out a negligee with a baby doll silhouette. It will hide her midsection while highlighting her arms and legs. Corsets are always great for managing her middle, with some styles cinching the area down a full two inches! Check out our Full-Figured section online.
Options are endless if she has a slender and muscular frame. She can wear longline bras, high-waisted underwear or other lingerie with ease. Wearing a sexy halter-neck bra will accent her frame. Pair it with matching thong or brief to accentuate her athletic limbs.
Bust out to showcase full breasts while giving them support with V-neck nighties and halter-top teddies. Lingerie isn’t always made with the big chested woman in mind. But there is one feature we can’t stress enough is using a underwire with extra shoulder support. There are sexy underwire options available to her. Choose a demi style with lower cut cups to frame her natural curves. As far as bottoms, try ones with thick waistbands or high waisted briefs or boy shorts to balance her larger top.
If she has a short torso, she will not want to draw attention to her waist. Stay away from the high waisted briefs and boy shorts. A plunging neckline instantly lengthens a shorter torso. Choose something with the appearance of a longer midsection and pairing with low-rise underwear or bikinis will help elongate your waistline. If you don’t like that style, she can try the newer Hipster style panties.
If she has a long torso and short legs, the lingerie style best suited to her couldn’t be more on-trend this season: high-waisted underwear. The retro silhouette is flattering on a number of shapes. She’ll love it as it’ll shorten her midsection and elongate her limbs — it’s a no-brainer. Shop a few playfully printed bottoms, then pair them with a black bra on top for an effortless, put-together look.
Her body is wider on top and gets slimmer on the way down. Switch up her standard matching bra-and-thong routine with a babydoll chemise or slip that will flatter her chest and shoulders. Pair with a see-through dress for added layers. The trick is making sure that whatever intimate you choose has a flared bottom to help promote symmetry.
The opposite of carrot-shaped, pear-shaped bodies have narrow shoulders and broad hips. You’ll want to seek out intimates that accentuate her delicate upper body, bringing the attention to your arms, shoulders, and clavicle. Bandeaus work wonderfully with smaller chests. One that cuts straight across her torso will create the appearance of width. A brief bottom will complement her curvier hips, but high-waisted cuts aren’t out of the question, either.
Another tip to minimize wide hips, is to opt for a long chemise that falls gently over her bottom half. Darker colors are generally more flattering and a push-up bra underneath helps make the most of her cleavage.
For women with apple shaped bodies, her waistline is her widest measurement area. Her hips and bust are more narrow and lingerie that elongates her waistline such as v-necks or body suits will do the trick. If she is also busty, look for options with side boning at the breasts to slim and support that area or underwire for extra support and coverage. Wrap a thick midsection in a sexy kimono; the “X” style will highlight curves and whittle down the waist.
If she doesn’t have much on the top you can forgo the bra completely and pair up with any style of bottoms! When she does wear a bra, she may run into constantly slipping straps. We suggest T-strap and racerback bralettes; they’re slightly sporty, flirty, and comfortable enough to wear all day. Feeling comfortable in your intimates really does make all the difference.
As the name suggests, ruler-shaped bodies are straight throughout — without much variation between one’s shoulder, waist, or hip. The key is finding undergarments that’ll subtly enhance your curves. Unlike traditional bras with bands that are an inch or 2 wide, longline bras and bralettes extend farther down the torso for a retro feel. They’re the crop tops of lingerie and, like high-waisted underwear, are often viewed as an intentional fashion statement. The good news for you: They’ll also help fill out her shape a bit without resorting to monstrous push-up bras.
Everyone wants this classic shape. Hourglass figures are easy to identify because they’re symmetrical: Her chest and hips are equally proportioned, and her waistline is her narrowest measurement. Use the “classic” shape to your advantage, and add a suspender belt to her bra-and-panty set. The fancy adornment (its original, intended purpose was to keep one’s stockings from slipping) will place the emphasis firmly on her narrow waist. The finished look it creates is classically sexy, like her shape.
Don’t forget the garter belt! Remember that garter belts and stilettos look sexy on everyone!
