A series of new studies confirm that sexual intimacy is still important for senior citizens. A University of Michigan study recently found that 40 percent of people between the ages of 65 and 80 are sexually active, confirming that the need for and interest in sexual intimacy doesn’t stop at a certain age. The New England Journal of Medicine and the University of Manchester have both released similar new findings.
Whether or not they have an active sex life, nearly two-thirds of older adults say they’re interested in sex. And men are way more interested than women. This isn’t to say that women aren’t interested at all, however, half of the 65- to 80-year-old men who were surveyed said they were extremely or very interested in sex, compared with 12 percent of women in that age group. In addition, only 31 percent of the women were sexually active compared with 51 percent of men who reported having sex. The poll did find that 43 percent of women are satisfied with their sex lives, compared with 31 percent of men.
Show’s like Netflix’s Grace and Frankie confirm that not only are senior still interested in having sex, they are also open to new experiences and partners. After all, today’s seniors were once known as the Free Love Generation. As young adults in the sixties, they were part of a movement that espoused more open attitudes about sexuality, including group sex and communal sex. They helped to legalize abortion and ensure access to birth control. So as they age, why are so many people surprised that seniors would want to have sex.
Thankfully, more manufacturers are creating products specifically designed to help our aging population continue to have great sex. They study found 52 percent of men and 25 percent of women reported they masturbated, regardless of whether they had a partner. And while you can’t buy Grace and Frankie’s Ménage à Moi vibrator, you can try a toy like Adrien Lastic’s Symphony. Its light weight, ergonomic design is perfect for women struggling with arthritis. And for men who are suffering from erectile dysfunction, products like an electronic penis pump are also light weight and easy for aging hands to use.
The Hand Pilot recognizes that today’s seniors can and should have a fulfilling sex life. We offer an assortment of toys and supplements to help seniors including lubricants to combat erectile dysfunction, vaginal dryness, condoms (because STD’s can occur at any age) and light, ergonomic toys.
